Will MS Dhoni Return to CSK for IPL 2027? CEO Kasi Viswanathan Shares Update
The future of MS Dhoni in the Indian Premier League (IPL) remains one of the biggest talking points among Chennai Super Kings (CSK) supporters.
The future of MS Dhoni in the Indian Premier League (IPL) remains one of the biggest talking points among Chennai Super Kings (CSK) supporters. After missing the entire IPL 2026 season, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter could potentially return for another campaign in 2027. However, no final decision has been announced.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan remains hopeful that Dhoni will continue playing for the franchise. His comments have renewed discussions about whether fans will see the former India captain back on the field for another IPL season.
Dhoni, who has been a central figure in CSK's success for nearly two decades, has yet to publicly confirm whether he intends to play in IPL 2027. For now, his future depends on his own decision and his assessment of whether he can continue meeting the physical demands of professional cricket.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan Hopeful of MS Dhoni's Return
According to a report published by India Today on October 13, 2026, Kasi Viswanathan believes Dhoni could still have more cricket left in him.
The CSK chief executive indicated that the franchise would leave the decision entirely to the veteran player. Dhoni has followed this approach in recent seasons, communicating his decision to the management when he arrives in Chennai.
The comments offer encouragement to supporters hoping for another season from the former captain. However, optimism from the franchise should not be interpreted as confirmation that Dhoni will participate in IPL 2027.
CSK have continued to respect Dhoni's autonomy over his playing future, leaving the final call in his hands.
Why Did MS Dhoni Miss IPL 2026?
Dhoni did not play a single match during IPL 2026 because of injury concerns. The season marked a significant break in his long association with the tournament, as the veteran had previously remained a regular presence in the competition.
The physical demands of professional T20 cricket have become an important consideration as Dhoni approaches the later stages of his playing career. His ability to recover, train consistently and withstand the demands of a full IPL campaign will be central to any decision about returning.
Although Dhoni remained involved with CSK during the season, his absence from the playing XI left supporters waiting for an appearance that never came.
His experience and leadership continued to be valuable to the franchise, particularly as the team worked to develop its younger players and establish a new combination.
Suresh Raina Also Wants Dhoni to Play in IPL 2027
Former CSK batter Suresh Raina has also expressed his desire to see Dhoni return for another IPL season.
Raina reportedly encouraged his former teammate to treat IPL 2026 as a missed opportunity rather than the end of his playing career. His comments reflect the hopes of supporters who would like Dhoni to have another chance to take the field for Chennai.
However, Raina has also acknowledged that the decision ultimately belongs to Dhoni. The veteran's response has indicated that his physical condition remains an important factor in determining his future.
While former teammates and fans may hope for a comeback, Dhoni has not made a definitive public commitment to IPL 2027.
Sanju Samson Has a Key Role in CSK's Future
While Dhoni's future remains uncertain, CSK have also begun shaping their team for the years ahead.
The franchise brought Sanju Samson into the squad ahead of IPL 2026. Samson offers wicketkeeping ability and top-order batting, giving Chennai another important option as it prepares for future seasons.
His presence also reflects CSK's need to plan for life beyond its long-serving former captain. Regardless of whether Dhoni returns, the franchise must continue building a competitive squad capable of challenging for the IPL title.
Dhoni's experience could remain valuable to the team in a playing capacity or another role, but the franchise has not confirmed any change to his status.
Will MS Dhoni Play in IPL 2027?
As of October 13, 2026, MS Dhoni's participation in IPL 2027 remains unconfirmed.
CSK's management is hopeful, but there are several factors to consider before a final decision is made:
- Fitness: Dhoni must assess whether his body can handle the demands of another IPL season.
- Personal decision: The final call rests with Dhoni rather than the franchise.
- Team planning: CSK must prepare its squad for IPL 2027 regardless of his decision.
- Support from fans and former teammates: Many supporters hope to see him play again, but their wishes do not guarantee a return.
Until Dhoni makes an announcement, speculation about his next season should be treated as unconfirmed.
