Zaheer Khan Joins CSK as Head Coach Ahead of IPL 2027
Chennai Super Kings have entered a new chapter ahead of IPL 2027 with the appointment of former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach.

Chennai Super Kings have entered a new chapter ahead of IPL 2027 with the appointment of former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan as their new head coach. The announcement on September 21, 2026, brings an end to Stephen Fleming’s long association with the franchise and marks Zaheer’s first head-coaching role in the Indian Premier League.
The appointment is significant for CSK, a franchise known for continuity and a strong cricketing culture. Zaheer now takes charge of a team preparing for a new season after missing the playoffs in three consecutive IPL seasons, including 2026.
A New Era After Stephen Fleming
Stephen Fleming had been one of the most important figures in CSK’s history. His association with the franchise stretched across 18 years, during which he helped build one of the most successful teams in IPL history.
With Fleming stepping down after IPL 2026 to take charge of England’s Test team, CSK needed a new voice in the coaching setup. The franchise has now turned to Zaheer Khan, bringing in an experienced former international cricketer with a strong background in player development and franchise management.
Zaheer’s appointment represents a change while also maintaining CSK’s focus on experience, tactical understanding and developing players.
Zaheer Khan’s Cricketing Legacy
Zaheer Khan is one of India’s most accomplished left-arm fast bowlers. During his international career, he represented India in 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is, taking 610 wickets across formats.
One of the biggest highlights of his career came during the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup, when Zaheer finished as India’s leading wicket-taker with 21 wickets. He played a crucial role in India’s World Cup-winning campaign on home soil.
His IPL career was also extensive. Zaheer played 100 IPL matches and took 102 wickets, representing franchises including Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Delhi.
Experience Beyond Playing
After retiring from professional cricket, Zaheer gradually moved into coaching, mentoring and cricket administration.
He spent several years with Mumbai Indians in senior cricket-development roles, including Director of Cricket Operations and later Global Head of Cricket Development. He subsequently worked with Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor.
These experiences have given Zaheer an understanding of different aspects of franchise cricket, from player development and recruitment to tactical planning and team management.
His knowledge of fast bowling could also become particularly valuable for CSK as the franchise continues to build and develop its bowling resources.
A Familiar Connection With MS Dhoni
Zaheer’s appointment also carries a familiar connection with MS Dhoni. Both were important members of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning squad, and their association stretches back to their international careers.
Reports indicate that Dhoni played a role in the process that led to Zaheer’s appointment, with CSK’s management looking toward an Indian coach for the next phase of the franchise.
CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan has also described Zaheer as one of the finest cricketing minds and highlighted his experience mentoring young cricketers, particularly fast bowlers.
What Zaheer Brings to CSK
Zaheer brings a combination of international experience, IPL knowledge and player-development expertise to his new role.
His understanding of pressure situations comes from years of playing international cricket, while his work with IPL franchises has given him insight into the demands of modern T20 cricket.
For CSK, his immediate challenge will be to help establish a new direction after a difficult run of seasons. The team will enter IPL 2027 looking to rebuild momentum while maintaining the culture that has been central to the franchise for years.
The Next Chapter Begins
Zaheer Khan’s arrival officially begins a new coaching era for Chennai Super Kings.
From being one of India’s leading fast bowlers to becoming a mentor and cricket administrator, Zaheer has gradually built experience across different areas of the game. Now, he takes on perhaps his biggest challenge yet — leading CSK from the dugout.
With IPL 2027 approaching, all eyes will be on how Zaheer shapes the squad, develops the next generation of players and works alongside the experienced CSK leadership group.
Zaheer Khan and Chennai Super Kings now begin a new chapter — one built around experience, development and the ambition to bring the franchise back to the top of the IPL.
